It is generally accepted among the scientific community and medical personnel that vaping is safer than smoking, but is it?
The popularity of vaping has risen widely over the last ten years as e-cigs have emerged as a viable and healthier alternative to cigarettes.
However, according to a new study, they may not be healthier than regular fags at all. According to a new study, e-cigarettes could cause similar levels of damage to traditional cigarettes, meaning vaping may not be the great saviour many had hoped.
E-liquid with nicotine is potentially as harmful as cigarettes with regards to cellular mutations and damage to DNA, according to the University of Connecticut study. DNA mutations are linked to various diseases, such as cancer.
“Some people use e-cigarettes heavily because they think there is no harm. We wanted to see exactly what might be happening to DNA, and we had the resources in our lab to do that,” said Karteek Kadimisetty, lead author of the study.
According to a separate survey by Action on Smoking and Health, most vapers have quit tobacco. Perhaps they’re not as healthy as they thought!
It will be interesting to see if any studies presenting completely the opposite emerge following the publication of this survey.
